Mailing the Food Cache
I mailed the food cache that Jen and I will share today. Food and a few other small items for two just fit n the bucket. (I left out a bag of yummy cookies that I had hoped to share. Oh, well…)
The bucket cost about $6 at OSH and the Priority Mail with confirmation postage was $13.65. They told me it would likely get there in 2-3 days, but that they couldn’t guarantee it.
Seems strange to have just packed food for a pack trip… and to not be leaving at 5:00 a.m.

A Slightly Decadent Way to Lighten the Pack
Owen visited Reds Meadow this weekend and reports that the diner offers decent looking dinners and breakfasts. Mammoth to South Lake 100, Summer 2005 trip participants with no shame may consider a day #2 dinner and a day #3 breakfast there.
I know I will.

Online Backpacking Food Source
I’ve used dinners from Mary Jane’s Farm for several years (along with other meals, including the usual grocery store stuff) and I like them quite a bit – despite their somewhat effete web site text…
You can order from them online. One option is to buy their so-called 1.5 person meals, which turn out to be about right for a normal backpacker. All of their products, including dinners, are listed here.
Another option that may be interesting to hungry young’uns is bulk packs of these dinners. They cost rougly $30 or a bit less for typically “18 servings” – which means the equivalent of a dozen of their packaged dinners. This gets the cost down to about $2.50 per meal – about half the price of equivalent packaged meals.
Hungry people could also package slightly larger meals from the bulk packs. For example, you could get about nine “2-person” meals out of a bulk pack. The price per meal would be around $3.00, which is quite a bit less than buying packaged backpacking dinners. It is still a bit more expensive than some of the really cheap grocery store food, but not by much.
