Regarding the plan, Ryan updates:
After an apparent lack of will and gut, the roster has dwindled down to only the strong:
Owen
Dan
Bellshaw
English
Sarah
Collin
Jennifer
Ernie
Drew? maybe?
Karen and a friend may join us at the end of the trip, coming up via Shepherd Pass.
Regarding transportation, I would like to know who is planning on driving and where you are driving from. After I get a total car count, I can start planning a car retrieval program. I’m forecasting a one car at the exit or entrance plan. More on that later… but I’m leaning towards one car at the entrance.
Again, here is the working itinerary:
- sat 4: drive to trailhead bbq, car camp
- sun 5: hike to and camp at cottonwood lake no. 4
- mon 6: old army pass, miter basin (probably)
- tue 7: crabtree pass (class 2) to eh, who knows
- wed 8: we’ll ask the moon
- thu 9: i don’t know
- fri 10: anvil camp after taking down shepherd pass
- sat 11: hike out, spend night in mammoth
- sun 12: drive home
As you may have noticed, the middle is kind of up in the air. We can be anywhere we want to be as long as we’re heading towards the exit. Real adventure you can touch!
Everyone has been backpacking before, you know what you need and what need to do and what not to bring and what not to leave in your cars.

regarding “we’ll ask the moon” and “I don’t know” — The Wallace Creek drainage is a very interesting place; cross-country up toward the crest to high, open (and, as I recall, cold and gloriously exposed to the weather and the sunset) terrain near the crest.

I had a great time for the few days I was with you all! I hope you had plenty of adventures on the rest of the trip!!!
Army Pass, on my way out, was pretty neat and easier to go down than New Army Pass. Both Soldier Lake and Cottonwood Lake No. 5 were neat places to stay!
I posted pictures I took on the Cottonwood Lakes trip on my website – http://www.websailor.org – scroll down the bottom where I post the newest links.

Hey Owen,
Looks like I was backpacking Shepherd Pass around the same time as you guys were last year. Explored the Upper Kern. See my photos at

Remember warmly Mount Langley with you and Mo back in ’98 or ’99, and Onion Valley to Mt Whitney in 2000.
